Physical activity was always praised in my household. As a kid, I was always encouraged to participate in team sports, our family outings always involved biking, hiking, or some other form of movement. I was so embedded in it that no other hobbies could manifest themselves- I didn't paint, I didn't sing, I didn't craft, I moved. I played basketball, soccer, swam, did rhythmic gymnastics, triathlons, often going past my limits. As much as I enjoyed it, I also began to internalize the feeling of sluggishness, lethargy, and unproductivity whenever I wasn't moving. I distinctly remember my mother instructing me to "sweat out my fever" in a basketball game when I had a severe sinus infection. And I did play.
Movement then became a form of punishment- or rather, I would punish myself when I wasn't moving. My body was in a constant state of exhaustion, and exhaustion was the extreme reward I could be granted. Everything in me moved fast, my cycle was short and my bleeding days intense and quick- as if a sink faucet suddenly exploded and was immediately patched up again. Rest was an inconceivable concept, and recovery a foreign language. I was constantly experiencing an out of body experience because I was not in my body, and throughout my entire adolescence and early adulthood I've always felt this way: floating above my body, watching it try to catch up to all the obstacles I set up for it. Waiting for the moment that I would trip and collapse.
It was only in my early 20s that I realized I had been tripping all along; collapsing was imminent. Through different forms of movement, I tried to unlearn my habits of punishing myself and to learn to work with my body as opposed to being its enemy. I improved, but the figure floating above me would manifest herself on occasion. Some days she is louder and hovers right above me, other days she sails in the atmosphere. In recent months, however, she loomed a few inches from my eyes: "you have to lift weights 2 times this week, play volleyball once, do pilates and yoga and walk your dog and run around the block to enjoy summer and swim and ride your bike to and from work and get 10K steps in daily and and and and and". The looming figure was getting too loud and taking up all the space in and above my head. Collapsing wasn't imminent anymore, it had happened long ago, but the figure was too busy dragging my body to realize it was on the floor.
I had to pick my body back up, but I couldn't let the figure pull it away again. That's when I began working with Natalie and The Current.
Slowness was a retreat and a reward. I could immediately feel my anxiety lessen, my heart rate steady as I decided that movement was no longer the enemy- I just had to move with the needs of my body and phases of my cycle. Natalie's program posed hard questions: "does how I feel match how I want to feel today"? Does anyone know how they want to feel? Perhaps not consciously, but our bodies do. Mine was so used to a constant state of stress, to a fight or flight, that it craved restoration. I was still moving- but in much lower doses- and trying to get the looming figure to stop setting obstacles and instead set boundaries. I learned to follow a rhythm instead of following a routine, searching for the inner body experience, slowly becoming embodied. I was out of my mind for so many years, and maybe I still am. But now I'm inside my heart.
